Boys and Girls

John Lewis has become the first UK retailer to remove gender labels from its children’s clothing.

The department store chain has not only taken “girls” and “boys” labels from clothes, but has also done away with the separate sections in stores.

John Lewis own-brand children clothing will now simply say “Girls & Boys” or “Boys & Girls.” More at The Independent.

I don’t know what to think about this. Logically it makes sense because boys can wear skirts if they want and girls can wear dinosaur jumpers, but what about the practical aspects of simply walking into a shop and trying to find clothes for your children.

Maybe this is an age thing, but this is one of the first things to spring up that has made me think ‘the world has gone mad’. Only for a moment, I must add, but are boys and girls clothes really offensive to some people? If so, I would question their sanity.

  1. Interesting. I suppose it doesn’t matter that much at pre-school ages. At some point, I suppose, girls and boys won’t want to be choosing their clothes with the other gender around. Although much of that is likely their parents’ and society’s influence. While there are obvious base physical and psychological differences between the sexes, things like clothing choices are more external influences.
