The world’s most profitable firm has a secretive new structure that would enable it to continue avoiding billions in taxes, the Paradise Papers show.

They reveal how Apple sidestepped a 2013 crackdown on its controversial Irish tax practices by actively shopping around for a tax haven.

It then moved the firm holding most of its untaxed offshore cash, now $252bn, to the Channel Island of Jersey… More at The BBC.

Can’t say I am shocked that Apple does this, that Lewis Hamilton and Bono seem to be involved, and that even the Queen is being dragged into this mess.

This is the way the world works, but the only saving grace is that we are starting to catch a glimpse of just how unequal it is.

  1. The Paradise Papers have gotten a lot of play in Canada. And it’s not that anyone has necessarily done anything wrong. There are lots of legal ways to avoid tax. The thing that gets most people is that you have to have money to save the tax so it’s the rich people and profitable companies that are avoiding the taxes that the rest of us have to pay in order to keep up our services that the rich and profitable companies also benefit from. It’s a question of paying your fair share. I don’t mind paying taxes if I get value for money. I do mind people not paying their fair share, legally or not.

  2. What’s scary is if the transhumanists are at all right – that we’re on the verge of dramatic life extension and/or augmentation of mind and body – there’s going to be a long while where those rich bastards are going to get that and us poor shlubs won’t.
