Your sense of time…

The sense of time I have as a millennial is so weird…
1970: About 30 years ago
1980: About 20 years ago
1990: About 10 years ago
2000: About 10 years ago
2010: About 1,000 years ago
2016: About 10,000 years ago
2018: About 1,000 years ago
Last week: About 1,000 years ago

The original tweet is here and at the time of writing it has been re-tweeted more than 17,000 times.

Our sense of time is obviously dictated by when we were born and by the major events that have happened in our lives, but to me 2000 does feel like 10 years ago and 2010 about 5. 1970 is hard to judge because that was the year I was born. How about you?

  1. With my Commonplace quote and link blog https://kirk.is , I’ve been updating it daily since 2001ish, and this year I’ve been going over that date’s entry for all those years (cleaning up broken videos and demarking quotes) and I guess it’s had the effect I sort of desired, reminding me how long a stretch of time that is. But still – I’ve been doing band for like 6 years and dating my gal for 4, and it feels like half of that for either.

I guess the other thing is, do the first two decades of the 2000s feel like they have their own style flavors?

The 90s had that problem at the beginning, but then kind of came into its Radical! own-

But I dunno. I could absolutely recognize a fashionable outfit from 1955 vs 1965 vs 1975 vs 1985 and probably vs 1995, but once Gap made an aspirational look of “khakis and a shirt” widely available I feel like we’ve been stuck. Or maybe it’s just me not changing my wardrobe all that much since college 😀 (except for a stretch when I never wore jeans, just khakis)

  2. Interesting. I would imagine that our sense of lived time varies depending on our experiences as well as how old we are. Events that I remember with great clarity feel closer than other events that I know about but don’t remember details of. I was born in the late 40s and fully retired about 5 years ago. Those 5 years have been as filled as the previous 5 but seem to have flown by a lot faster.

So for me, 2014 is yesterday. Last week is 5 minutes ago. The 60s are 50 years ago but the early 70s are like 10 years ago. The 80s and 90s are 30 to 40 years ago. Then it contracts again. The 2000s are 10 years ago.

I can certainly relate to many of them.
